To add more privacy, the WhatsApp application allows the possibility of locking chats for specific conversations among the conversations on the personal application.
On its official website, WhatsApp explains that the feature is possible to add more privacy, but to read or send messages, you will need to unlock the conversation using the device authentication feature, such as entering the passcode or FaceID fingerprint or using a secret code.
These chats will be kept separate from other chats in the locked chats folder. Depending on the language you use in WhatsApp, the name of the feature may appear differently as chat lock or chat block.
When chats are locked, the content of the notification and contacts are hidden.
Chat lock is supported on Android, iPhone, and the web. If you have any of these additional devices connected to WhatsApp, you can lock conversations on those devices as well, but you’ll need to create a passcode on your primary device to unlock your locked conversations on another device.
Group chats and muted chats can also be locked. Calls won’t be locked, so calls from a locked contact or chat group will continue.
When you enable Chat Lock on your phone, chats will only be locked on your phone. If you have other devices connected to WhatsApp, such as a computer, chats on those connected devices will not be locked.
When you enable Chat Lock, the person you’re chatting with won’t know you’ve locked the chat.
If you set up a passcode to lock chats, you can choose to hide the Locked Chats folder so that it only appears when you type the passcode into the search bar.
To enable Chat Lock on your mobile device, swipe left on the conversation or long-press on the chat you want to lock. Tap the More options corner and choose Chat Lock and do so using your fingerprint or face ID.
You can also choose to hide the locked chats folder so that it does not appear in your chat list and only appears when you type the passcode, to do this, go to the locked chats folder, choose settings and then tap on passcode.
The app warns that if you unlock and clear all locked chats, this means that the chat history will be permanently cleared.
